The potential form of verbs is used for clothes, etc. that cannot be used anymore. However, the regular verb is used when the clothes, etc. are not used anymore (has gone out of use).
むすこがあきて読よまなくなった本ほんを、友ともだちの子こどもにあげました。
I gave the books my son has grown tired of and doesn't read anymore to a friend's child.
